[Video below] Wilson County officials have gone on record to join county residents in opposition to a plan to export water from the county.

Commissioners met Oct. 27 and unanimously adopted a formal resolution — drafted with the assistance of the county attorney — by Pct. 4 Commissioner John “Scott” Akin. The resolution states the county’s opposition to the Springs Hill Special Utility District’s (SUD) plan to pump water from a well in Wilson County and transport it for use by their customers, the majority of which are in Guadalupe County. Springs Hill SUD has applied to the Evergreen Underground Water Conservation District (UWCD) for a permit to put the plan into action.

The county’s action comes after a recent public meeting in Stockdale hosted by the Springs Hill personnel to answer questions from the community about the impact of the project on their private water wells. (See “Stockdale residents sound off on water concerns,” Oct. 22 Wilson County News).

“This is not about one well,” county resident Cody Little told commissioners. “This is a gateway well … to ship our water out of our county.”

“I’m not happy and the people I represent are not happy,” said Akin, whose precinct includes the city of Stockdale.

He added that once the first permit is approved, “we may not be able to stop [others].”

Public hearing

The Evergreen UWCD will hold a public hearing on the Springs Hill SUD’s permit application on Friday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m., at the Evergreen headquarters, located at 110 Wyoming Blvd. in Pleasanton. Written public comments must be submitted to the board by 9 a.m. on the day of the meeting.

For more information about the application, go to evergreenuwcd.org or call 830-569- 4186.

‘Town hall’ meeting Nov. 6

A public town hall meeting will be held by concerned community members on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. in Stockdale City Hall, located at 700 W. Main St. in Stockdale, to discuss the future and protection of Wilson County’s water. All county residents are encouraged to attend.
