US data center firm Rowan Digital Infrastructure has broken ground on a new data center project in Texas.

The company this week announced that it is beginning construction on the Cinco data center campus, a 300MW hyperscale project outside San Antonio, Texas.

Located in Medina County and served by utility AEP, the 440-acre site is expected to be fully operational in 2027. On its website, Rowan says an initial 60MW will be available in Q4 2025 - though the company has reached out to say that is now early 2026. Renders suggest the site could total seven buildings, though the first phase is set to be one building.

Rowan said the $900 million Cinco project is “tailored to the long-term needs of a top five US technology company.”

"Cinco represents more than just another hyperscale data center — we are delivering the critical digital infrastructure that will unlock generational opportunities across our 21st-century economy,” said Rowan CEO Charley Daitch.

“This is a major milestone for Rowan, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with our hyperscale customers, local community leaders, and all stakeholders to deliver this transformational project.”

Lytle City Council and Medina County Commissioners’ Court unanimously approved all applications for the project in March.

“Our community welcomes development that is done the right way — openly, responsibly, and with long-term benefits for our residents,” said Lytle Mayor Ruben Gonzalez.

“Rowan’s commitment to transparency, sustainability, and partnership shows what it means to be a good neighbor. This is exactly the kind of investment that strengthens our economy while respecting the values of our community.”

Rowan said the Cinco project takes Rowan to more than 1GW of fully contracted data center capacity across the country.

Set up in 2021 by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners and Birch Infrastructure, Rowan (formerly known as Rowan Green Data) is developing three campuses within TPG’s Quantum Frederick Park in Maryland. Rowan is also developing a 300MW campus in Temple, Texas, and a four-building campus in Oregon.

University Pension Plan Ontario is an investor in the company.

Microsoft has a major presence around San Antonio. Amazon, H5, Vantage, QTS, CyrusOne, Stream, and CloudHQ have or are developing facilities in the city.
